Carson was born in Los Angeles, California, the son of actress Karen Black (née Ziegler) and actor, producer, screenwriter and director L. M. Kit Carson. He is stepson of Stephen Eckelberry and stepbrother of Celine Eckelberry, Stephen's daughter.
